Diabetes by the Numbers

Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States, and a contributing factor to other serious health conditions. Here are a few of the facts:

  • 38.4 million Americans have diabetes, almost 12 percent of the population.
  • 352,000 American children and adolescents under age 20 have diabetes.
  • 90-95 percent of all diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes.
  • 8.7 million Americans are estimated to have undiagnosed diabetes.
  • 1.2 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year.
  • 98 million American adults have prediabetes, more than 1 in every 3.
  • 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it.
  • 27.5 million Americans with diagnosed diabetes are 45 years or older.
